DYLAN MARTIN
Family Law Clerk
I didn’t originally come to law with dreams of a polished corporate career. In fact, I didn’t decide to pursue law until my mid-twenties.
After finishing high school, I spent several years travelling Australia, working across a range of industries and enjoying life without the immediate pressure of university or long-term career planning. Much of that time was spent in trade and labour-focused roles, experiences that gave me a grounded perspective and taught me the value of hard work, resilience and connecting with people from all walks of life.
Over time, I felt drawn to work with greater meaning and purpose. Law had always interested me growing up, but as a teenager, I had largely placed it in the “too hard basket” while focusing on everything else that comes with being young. When I eventually decided to pursue a career in law, it was not a decision I made lightly. I was fully committed to doing whatever was necessary to make it happen.
Not long after, I relocated to the ACT after being offered a position with a prominent firm working on historical abuse matters. That experience confirmed that law was where I wanted to build my future. I later commenced my legal studies at the University of New England before returning to the Gold Coast to continue both my studies and legal career.
As I progressed through the profession, I was fortunate to gain exposure to several areas of law, including litigation and property matters. Ultimately, I found myself most drawn to legal work involving real people facing deeply personal and often life-changing situations. That path naturally led me to family law.
I joined BGM in March 2026 and have been grateful for the opportunity ever since. The culture, professionalism and genuine care shown by the team towards both clients and one another have made it an incredible place to work and develop my skills in family law.
As I continue my studies at the University of New England, I look forward to continuing my progression within the firm and taking the next step into practice upon my admission as a lawyer in 2027.
